Gardens of The Magnificent Mile

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Swissôtel Chicago is proud to be part of Gardens of The Magnificent Mile. Below is a list compiled by GNMAA, the association that partners with members and local business to provide the awe-inspiring gardens along The Magnificent Mile.

Top 10 Facts and Things to do for Chicago Gardeners

1. Enjoy the Gardens of The Magnificent Mile

This summer, hundreds of species of plants will bloom in more than 50 garden beds on North Michigan Avenue. Plant yourself on The Magnificent Mile this summer and watch summer come into bloom. For more information, visit www.themagnificentmile.com.

2.  Floral trends tend to follow Women’s fashion. This year yellow is very popular not only in fashion but also in everyone’s garden.

3.  Take part in the 51st Annual Garden Walk

The North Dearborn Association presents its 51st Garden Walk featuring over 20 private rear gardens in the Gold Coast neighborhood. A Garden Walk ticket includes a guided architectural tour of historic North Dearborn Street, live jazz and classical performances in select gardens, and garden vignettes. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the gate. Visit www.dearbornwalk.com.

4.  In order to achieve a high impact garden, limit yourself to one or two colors and use them in many different types of plants and flowers throughout your garden.  Make sure to group at least 5 plants of one color together and then alternate heights and textures.

5.  Roll into summer by renting a bike and exploring the beauty of the city.

Take advantage of one of the several Chicago bike rental companies and tour the city on two wheels. It is a great time to explore the different trees, plants and flowers that grow around the city.

Check out one of these bike rental companies:

6.  Avoid watering after 5:00 pm unless you must. The flowers need to dry out during the day. Watering in early evening leads to disease, wilt, fungus and death.

7.  Visit the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

Learn about nature and the environment with this renowned Chicago museum. The museum offers more than 100 educational programs for adults and children.

8.  Buy larger plants instead of cell packs. They will acclimate quicker, require less fertilizer and be more stable in the long run.

9.  Take a tour of parks around the city

With over 552 parks, Chicago has more parkland than any other city in the United States.

10.  Preparation of planting beds or soil medium is the key to a successful garden, planter, pot or window box display. When using a planter or window box, always discard the previous summer’s soil mix and replace with new soil for a fresh start.
