International Talk Like a Pirate Day

The Field Museum’s Activities

September 19, 2009

10a – 3p

Kids (or squids in pirate-speak) and adults can join in all the pirate fun including treasure hunts around the Museum, performances, and nautical-themed crafts.

Witness sword-fights by Lifeline Theater’s Treasure Island cast members, and an appearance by Navy Pier’s mascot: Patch the Pirate Dog.  Visitors will be greeted all-day by “real” parlance-speaking pirates from the Crewe of the Arch Angel.  The Crewe accurately portrays the lives of mariners and civilians during the Golden Age of Piracy (1680s-1720s).

Dress up as a brazen buccaneer!  Prizes will be given out to kids (up to age 11).

Book your Pirates Package today!

Recycling Electronics

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Looking to get rid of your old cell phone, computer or TV?

Did you know that cell phones contain toxic materials such as mercury?  Or that your once beloved computer and TV may live in the land fill for over 2,000 years?  Instead of throwing your items in the trash, choose an eco-friendly way to dispose of your old items while helping someone in need.  The below websites provide a few great resources to assist you with finding a local recycling center and a charity that will warm your heart.

Green is the New White for Weddings!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Brides are going green, and Swissôtel Chicago can make it happen

You can forget the white wedding… These days when it comes to weddings, it’s all about being green.  Brides are striving to create their dream wedding with a smaller carbon footprint, and the experts at Swissôtel Chicago have been helping brides achieve this with inventive solutions.

Here are some ideas to keep in mind when planning your own green wedding, from Swissôtel Chicago’s Catering Department:

  • Use Post-Consumer Recycled Content:  From invitations to place cards, try to use a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer recycled content.  Post-consumer recycled content uses products that have completed their life cycle and would otherwise be turned into waste.  All the paper products used at Swissôtel Chicago are made from a minimum 30 percent post-consumer recycled content and every event room includes a recycling bin.

  • Consider Modifying Your Décor:  A creative decorating idea is to use edible centerpieces that still add to the décor but are not wasteful as flowers can be.  Using organic linens is another way to cut back your carbon footprint.  Also, avoid plastic materials wherever possible.

  • Buy Your Food Locally and Choose Organic Meal Options:  For starters, choose items that are in season.  This reduces the transportation fees and allows you more flexibility to buy locally.  When purchasing meat, buy from a local producer and look for organic choices such as free range beef and chicken and cage-free organic eggs.  Swissôtel Chicago offers a banquet menu that is completely organic, with as much as 84 percent of the food coming from local vendors.

  • Prepare Your Food Smartly:  Remember, the less processed the better.  Processing not only makes food less healthy, it adds to your carbon footprint as well. There are also cooking methods that will save energy, like the Rational Cooking method employed by Swissôtel Chicago.
